Harnessing the power
of good chemistry
Crude oil is made up of thousands of different hydrocarbons that all boil at different temperatures, and the refinery products of LPG, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and fuel oil are themselves mixtures of hydrocarbons rather than individual hydrocarbons.
Refining processing
The primary method for separating the products is distillation, and cracking some of the heavier fuel oil increases the yield of more valuable products.

Refinery
Operations
Semberina Refinery’s primary products are gasoline, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and other products, including fuel oils such as bunker fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation gasoline, petroleum coke, and sulphur.
Semberina Refinery processes 10,679 barrels of crude oil per day in the manufacture of petroleum products and chemicals used to manufacture many other useful products.
The refinery also manufactures a range of specialty products that include paraxylene, a pure compound used in the textile and plastics industries, and benzene and ethylbenzene, used in the manufacture of a wide range of products including automobile tyres, sporting goods, nylon, and pharmaceuticals.
Exploration
Delivery
Semberina Refinery gets its crude oil from our exploration activities on the Caspian Sea and the Eastern European Continental Shelf. All the crude oil processed at the refinery arrives by pipelines, train tracks, and marine tankers. The crude oil is discharged through pipelines to storage tanks in the refinery.
The Semberina expansion project doubled the refinery’s refining capacity by adding additional crude, hydrocracking, hydrogen, and reformer units and constructing a sulphur recovery plant.
Semberina Refinery’s partnership with tank farms, pipelines, and shipping companies at more than 112 facilities enables faster shipping, loading, and delivery times.
Upstream and
downstream activities
At Semberina Refinery, our businesses work in concert to provide the energy that drives human progress. The refinery uses innovation to maximise mature fields and discover new reservoirs.

Developing vital
energy resources
Semberina Refinery uses its global resources, determination, and ingenuity to meet today’s complex energy challenges. We work in extremely difficult environments, such as ultra-deep water and harsh winter conditions.
Successful exploration
The refinery added 7% of hydrocarbons to our additional proven reserves.
Exploration licenses
Approved exploration licenses to execute major hydrocarbon offshore projects on the continental shelf.
On-schedule delivery
Strategic storage facilities across the continents where crude oil products are stored until needed for supply to the right locations at the right times.
